Skinimalism: Why less in skincare is more
Shifting from product overload to mindful skincare consumption
Go Cirkulär Skincare Essentials
Walk into any beauty store or spend a few minutes scrolling through social media, and you'll quickly encounter the message that better skin requires more products. Cleansers, toners, serums, exfoliants, masks, treatments, oils, moisturisers, you name it! All products are presented as essential steps in the pursuit of healthy, youthful, glowing skin.
But what if healthier skin doesn’t come from adding more products? What if the secret lies in simplifying instead? The term skinimalism refers to an approach that means using fewer, multi-purpose products and focusing on a simple routine that supports healthy skin rather than using lots of steps (4).
We are in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle era, and still, we go all in when it comes to skincare overconsumption and waste. Do you agree? Based on dermatological advice and recommendations, sticking with a few carefully chosen products can benefit not only your skin barrier but also have a positive impact on the environment (4, 2).
By embracing a more mindful approach to skincare, you can create a routine that feels easier, more effective, and more sustainable - without sacrificing results or emptying your pocket.
The Problem With Product Overload
Trendy products and new ingredients may be exciting. But as a result, many people end up with crowded bathroom shelves filled with partially used products. Some are forgotten, some expire before they're finished, and others simply don't suit the skin they were purchased for.
So, are you really making use of the skincare you buy?
Beyond the environmental impact of unused products and packaging, product overload can also make it harder to understand what your skin actually needs. When several new products are introduced at once, it becomes difficult to identify which ones are helping and which may be causing irritation or breakouts.
More Products Don't Always Mean Better Results
Healthy skin isn't necessarily the result of a lengthy routine. For many people, a simple approach built around a few carefully selected products can be just as effective as a ten-step routine.
A gentle cleanser, a moisturizer that supports the skin barrier, and daily sun protection are often the foundation of a healthy skincare routine (1). Additional products can certainly have benefits, but they should ideally serve a clear purpose rather than being added simply because they're trending.
Your Skin Benefits From Consistency
One overlooked advantage of owning fewer products is consistency. Skin typically responds best when given time to adapt to a routine. Constantly switching products can make it difficult to evaluate results and may increase the likelihood of irritation, especially for sensitive skin.
When you find products that work well, using them consistently allows you to better understand your skin's needs and responses over time (1).
Our Guide For a Simple Skincare Routine - Just a Few Products!
End your day by washing your face with a gentle cleanser. Choose a cleanser that does not dry your skin. Tap your face dry with a clean and soft towel.
In the morning, apply a couple of drops of serum on dry skin. When choosing your serum, take a look at the ingredient list. Avoid products with long ingredient lists.
Finish your routine with a nourishing face cream. Don’t forget to protect against UV radiation during the sunny season! (4, 3)
Less Can Be More
The beauty industry often encourages us to believe that better skin is always one purchase away. But healthy skin doesn't necessarily require more products, more steps, or more consumption; the opposite!(3)
At Go Cirkulär, we find the most effective routine is also the simplest one: choosing products carefully, using them consistently, and buying only what you truly need.
For your skin, your wallet, and the planet, going minimal on your skincare can be more.
